Philippians 4:6-7KJV

There is so much chaos around us now and there are many special needs and requirements these days that we see in the church, amongs families/friends, in communities and in the world at large that requires attention and prayers. These chaos as a result of the current pandemic situation globally has succeeded in taking away the peace of mind of many.

Unfortunately, many people except a few believers are afraid, confused and weary of mind because they have no hope that things will get better. However, for us the children of God, we hold on to His word in our Bible text for today which says that the peace of God which passes all understanding wIll keep our hearts and minds through this pandemic and every unpleasant situation in life.

I pray this morning that the Lord will ordain His Peace for us no matter the circumstances around us.

God bless you.

Brethren, We need the peace of God that passes all understanding in these present times. That is the only way we can overcome anxiety and the attendant fear of the pandemic and whatever life throws at us in this new normal.

The opposite of peace is trouble and with trouble comes fear and worry; and worry cannot solve any problem. There is a saying that goes thus: “if you have a problem and you know the solution why worry ? and if you don’t have the solution why worry ?. So in either case why worry ?. The Bible says in 1 Peter 5:7 ”casting all your cares (i.e.burdens) upon Him for he cares for you” and Isaiah 26:3 says “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” NLT. No matter what, God will always ensure the peace of His children who trust in Him.

With these promises of God in mind, Brethren, Let us shift our gaze from our problems and the uncertainties around us and focus on Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, let us seek only to please Him and the peace of God that passes all understanding will keep our hearts and mind in Christ Jesus.

There is nothing new under the sun as the word of God says in Eccl 1:9 except His mercies as in Lam 3:22. His mercies bestowed upon us each day  guarantees our peace of mind. The Lord Jesus Christ said in John 14:27 “ Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid”.

Brethren, If the peace of God is keeping our hearts and mind then we will worry less and we will not be afraid at all irrespective of what this Lockdown and the new normal or life throws at us; be it sickness, disappointment, delay in marriage, loss of job, business down turn, marital storms ,financial instability etc.

I want to encourage us to hold on to the word of God in Isaiah 41:10 which says “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. I pray that the right hand of God that doeth valiantly will always fight for us and we shall hold our peace in Jesus name.

When we are afraid, worry sets in, doubt comes and we begin to trust less the promises of God and finally the peace of God is taken away from us.

Brethren, the peace of God is taken away when we allow the devil to put fear in our hearts. when we believe his lies against the word of God, worry takes over our mind.

The word worry comes from a Greek word meaning ‘to divide the mind.’ Our mind becomes divided between the things we fear and the promises of God. We know we should trust God but we fear what might happen in our future. Really, worry doesn’t get us anywhere. Jesus said in Matthew 6:27 “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?’ All worrying does is to take away our strength and peace of mind. May we not fall prey to the lies of the devil that will take away our peace in Jesus name.

I like the Message Bible version of our text for today. It goes thus:

“Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.”

This translation says it all. I hope it ministers to someone whose heart is troubled this morning in Jesus name.

Our Bible text has a two-part answer to this question:

Number one is, Our part and Number two is God’s part.

(A) PRAYER: This is what we need to do first and foremost. We dont have to worry about anything; instead, we should pray about everything. Tell God what you need and what troubles you. 1 Thes 5:17 says we should pray without ceasing and Luke 18:1 says men ought always to pray. Our text ref says ‘in all things by prayer and supplication make your request known to God’. So prayer is key.

(B) GRATITUDE: We must thank God for all he has done. As we see in Philippians 4:6. God says we should be anxious for nothing but in all things we must pray with thanksgiving. i.e even while making our requests, it must be with thanksgiving. Also, before we go to God for the next request let’s remember to take time to thank Him for what He has already done for us. For example Our Lord Jesus Christ first gave thanks at the tomb of Lazarus in John 11:41 and when He fed the multitudes in John 6:11. Too often we can forget what God has just done in our lives because we are too focused on worrying about the next thing we need. May we not be ingrates in Jesus name.

(A) God takes the worry we bring to Him in prayer and exchanges it for His perfect peace. The Bible says: ‘You will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything a human being can understand. This is what I call ‘PEACE IN THE MIDST OF STORMS’ i.e the peace that gives you hope that irrespective of the negative circumstances starring you in the face you can rest assured that you will overcome in the end.

In 2 Kings 4:20-26 , the Shunamite woman kept saying “It is well” even after her son had died. In the end She got her son back alive. She was in the midst of storms, yet she had the peace of Jehovah that passes all understanding that kept her going. Imagine someone whose son had just died and she kept saying all is well. Brethren, We should emulate this great woman by forming the habit of saying ‘it is well’ even when the reverse is the case. The Lord will help us in Jesus name.

I pray for someone this morning who is in the midst of whatever storms that the peace of God that pases all understanding will give you stability and you will come out victorious in Jesus name. ( Further ref: Acts 27:22-24, Mark 4:39)

(B) God’s peace will guard your heart and mind as you live in Christ Jesus. In other words, as you daily carry your cross (Matt 16:24) and follow him in total obedience and fully surrender to His will. (Matt 26:39). Daily meditations and study of the word of God will guard your heart against negative thoughts and you will always be at peace with yourself and others. (Psalm 119:11, Joshua 1:8, Heb 12:14)

(C) His peace assures you of safety even while you are asleep. Psalm 4:8 says “ I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.” In other words, You are safe and at peace when you lay down to sleep even if you are surrounded by friends who actually are enemies (Proverbs 16:7)

(D) His peace assures divine protection in the midst of chaos and uncertainties such as the world is facing now. We are at peace knowing that a thousand may fall at our side and ten thousand at our right hand but it shall not come near us.( Psalm 91: 7)

In conclusion, we must remember that the Bible does not say we ‘might’ experience God’s peace, but it says we ‘will’. It is a promise and a definite one at that. God is offering His peace to us right now.

Whether we have testimonies to share or not, or our prayers are yet to be answered , We need to make sure we are constantly doing our part by praying and thanking God daily and then we will have a peaceful state of mind.

God created us for His pleasure and to fulfill His purpose. For as long as we live to please Him, we will continue to experience His goodness which culminates in us having His peace that surpasses all understanding and our hearts and minds will be kept in Christ till we see Him in glory in Jesus mighty name. AMEN.
