James 1:

2. My brethren, count it all joy when we fall into divers temptations

3. Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience

4. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing

1 Peter 5:10

10. But the God of all grace, who hath called us into His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

Galatian 5:22-23

22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith

23. Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

MESSAGE

Perseverance means to persist in a state, enterprise or undertaking in spite of counter influences, opposition or discouragement. Without trials or tribulations in life, our faith would not be tested, and we would not grow or persevere and without perseverance our characters would not be transformed.

Perseverance is an abiding under a circumstance. It also means patience. Patience may be active which involves persistence in well-doing, fruit-bearing and running the appointed race despite trials and tribulations of life.

The words ENDURANCE and PERSEVERANCE may be used interchangeably, PERSEVERANCE connotes action. It is staying power. It gives us a long-term perspective.

Heb12:1-4 says we should make Christ our focus as we run the race of life with perseverance.

The Christian life is a long-distance race rather than a short sprint. I Cor 9:24-27– it is to be run with patience and self-control.  Phil 2:14-16– the race of life should be run with focus. It

should not be aimless. We should not run in vain.

The current situation in Nigeria calls for great perseverance and endurance. The whole world is suffering from the effect of the Covid19 pandemic. Apart from the bereavement, the lockdown has brought a lot of economic hardship on several nations of the world. The economy of Nigeria, fragile even at the best of times, has been negatively affected by the pandemic. The riots of October 2020 compounded the problem further for Nigeria. But we need perseverance and should not resort to stampeding and calling for the breakup of the country into several parts. 2 Cor 14:16-17 says our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs our problems.

Romans 18:8 also says our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory ahead of us. WE DON’T HAVE MORE PROBLEMS THAN OTHER PEOPLE, WE JUST THINK ABOUT THEM MORE OFTEN. What you think produces how you feel. To experience a feeling, you must first entertain the thought that produces the feeling.

It is when we attempt the impossible that we can say we are trusting the resources of God. Trusting God to provide a good husband at 40 years, trusting God to provide a baby at over 50 years (for a lady), trusting God for a new job at 55 to 60 years old.

FDR Roosevelt, the 32nd American President gave the famous quote that “when you get to the end of your rope tie the knot and hold on”. The end of the rope is not the end of you

The popular hymn says “Hold the fort, for I am coming, Jesus signals still….”

This is not the time to consider quitting on Nigeria or whatever is the problem you are currently facing. The time calls for ENDURANCE. Quitting doesn’t build character, endurance does. Endurance develops something in you that nothing else can. Nobody knew more about endurance than our Lord Jesus Christ. He endured all the way to Calvary. Life is full of quitting points, but if you throw in the towel on your marriage, your career, or your dream, you may regret it for the rest of your life. Only by staying the course can God strengthen you and make you a winner. Stay in the race and learn to look at life’s circumstances through the cross of Jesus.

In conclusion, patience (endurance) is simply trusting God with the “how” and “why’ and in “when” of our circumstances. As we look back on some of the things we waited so badly for, we realise that God kept us from getting into some major messes. Impatience is one of the dominant characteristics of children, it is spiritual immaturity. So, be patient.

 PRAYER:

1. Father, the God of grace please settle me after this current suffering.

2. Father, please let me not miss the glory ahead through impatience.

3. Father, help me to focus on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of my faith

4. Father, please rekindle my hope in You. Job14:7. There is hope for the believer and the faithful.

5. Father, please give me grace to endure to the end of my race here on earth.

6. May we all receive grace to overcome the temptation to quit the good race of life.

God bless you and good morning
