Is the grass greener on the other side.
Text: Genesis 13:9-10
Worship: You make me lie down in green pastures.
Our Lord and God you are mighty, wonderful, excellent and marvellous. You are Almighty, All Able, All Knowing, All Powerful and All Sufficient God. To You Lord be all the Glory and Honour.
Father we thank You for watching over us and ours and waking us up this morning, we do not take this for granted Lord. We indeed rejoice and are glad in this day that you have made.
A man or woman leaves or separates from the spouse of his/her youth because he/she has been blessed materially and believes they deserve a better spouse.
A person is happy and content with the house or other material possession they have until they hear of a friend/church member or two who have what looks better and then they lose rest and sleep until they can get same.
Parents are seemingly okay that their children are doing well academically and happy with the schools they are attending until they find out their neighbour/friend’s child is in any Ivy League school, and then restlessness sets in.
One is doing fairly well in their chosen career and business and then we see that other person in another business or industry flourishing and gbam… then moves are made to switch.
Brethren, I don’t intend to focus on lack of contentment or jealousy this morning. I just want to ask a simple question, who told you that, the “Grass is Greener on the other side?”
Don’t let us be like Lot Gen 13:9-10. He saw what appeared to be the greener and more attractive land and chose that. Ultimately, that turned out be a poor choice compared with Abraham’s choice. As believers that trust in God we need to understand that God’s thoughts and ways are different from ours (Isaiah 55:8). It is absolutely important that we let God be our compass and guide rather be driven by the “I want to be like my neighbour or better pass my neighbour syndrome”.
We should not be fooled by the glittering options. The elders say that not all that glitters is gold and this true. The devil will often lure us away from the Godly path by flashing alternatives that can destroy us. 1 Samuel 16:7b tells that God sees not as man sees. As children we should also not be fooled by outward appearances…for instances do you know the huge debts funding the expensive lifestyle of your neighbour / friend that you are desirable of emulating.
The greener option will deprive you of the greenest option. In Genesis 26, we see that Isaac was attracted in his mind to the Greener and more fertile Egypt. God intervened and warned him not to even try it. Brethren without a doubt, if Isaac had sought the Greener Egypt then, his status as a man who waxed great in Genesis 26:13 will not have materialised. I particularly get concerned when most youths just want to check out to just anywhere outside Nigeria, have they sought the face of God.
Brethren what really matters is our own grass and not the grasses of other people. God promised us in Psalm 23:2, that he make us to lie down in green pastures, I take this to mean my own green pasture not that of another person. God who clothes the Grass of the field (Matthew 6:30) is more than able to make your grass/life the greenest/best it can be.
As a run away Agriculturist, I know that the grass can be greenest where you have a concentration of manure (animal waste). So is the case where the greenest grasses or awesome lifestyle we admire is anchored on; membership of a cult with its attendant cost (many are in it don’t be deceived), corrupt practises, etc. Let us take heed of the admonition of the Psalmist in Psalms 37:1-2, the grass of the wicked and corrupt is cut down and we need not envy them.
Per adventure if the pursuit of the greener grass has derailed any one from Jesus or we have never fully surrendered to Jesus, this is the best time to do so. The Lord will have mercy and accept us back or anew in Jesus name.
1. Father thank you for all that you have done for us and will yet do for us and we stay on Your track for our lives.
2. 2. Father where we have sought the carnally inclined options in our lives, please have mercy on us and lead us back to You in Jesus name.
3. Father whenever we ask for or desire something outside of Your will that is capable of derailing our path to heaven please impose a brick wall between us and those desires in Jesus name.
4. Father in accordance with Your word in Psalms 65:10-11, please drench our grass with abundant rain and crown our lives with bountiful blessings in Jesus name.
5. Father please let our lifestyles and witnessing bring those who have sold their souls back into Your loving embrace in Jesus name.
6. As this month and quarter draws to an end, please draw our destiny helpers to us and make us accomplish the unbelievable and unimaginable in Jesus name.
