God of deliverance

Psalm 124:1-8

  1. If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, now may Israel say;
  2. If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us:
  3. Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:
  4. Then the waters has overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:
  5. Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
  6. Blessed be the Lord, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
  7. Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
  8. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Heavenly Father, the most glorious, most blessed Lord, we give all the praise and glory to Your name for another day of peace and blessings. Thank You for the world so sweet, thank You for the gift of every breath we take. Thank You Lord for everything.
We, the ransomed, healed, restored and forgiven have come to say a big THANK YOU.

Accept our praises in the precious name of Jesus. We are here today to appreciate our deliverance from troubles seen and unseen. We come to acknowledge that safety is of thee O Lord. Thank You for past deliverances, current deliverance and future deliverances. Glory be to Your name.

If God is not with us, we have no chance to escape the pitfalls of life or ward off our spiritual enemy. The dangers and troubles we face may seem so overwhelming that no one but God and His miraculous power can save us. Apostle Paul, (Rm 8:31), asked the question if God be for us, who can be against us? He gave the answer in Rm8:32 “He that spares not His own son but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things”.
He went on in Rm8:38-39 to say that nothing can separate us from the love of God.
No foe or situation can defeat us when God is on our side.

Deliverance indeed is of the Lord

The Psalmist here in Ps 124:1-8 took a look at previous years of deliverance by the Lord and it is important for us as children of God to have introspection as well. It is important to remember the past goodness and mercy of God. The past mercies of God help us in our trust and confidence in the ability of the same God to help us in present circumstances. 2Cor1:10(NIV)”who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that He will yet deliver us”. May the deliverances God had wrought in our lives in the past strengthen our resolve for the present and hope in the future in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Examples from the Bible
We want to look at a few examples of great deliverances in the scriptures and then relate them to our contemporary times.
Why are we doing this? We are doing it to appreciate God and to return all the glory back to Him.

We will start by looking at the history of the people of God in the Bible- the deliverance from Egypt, the journey of 40 years through the desert and entrance into the Promised Land, the Babylonian captivity and the return of the exiles to Jerusalem, the coming of Jesus Christ to the world (the incarnation), the death and resurrection of Christ, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. If the Lord had not intervened in all these events, history would have taken a completely different turn. Humanity would have been lost and without hope. Now let us look at some specific cases in the Bible of divine intervention that led to deliverances.

What if the Lord had not intervened in Exodus 2 to ensure that Moses was not killed but adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter. God even went further to ensure that Moses had Hebrew nurture (from his own mother) at the expense of Pharaoh. If the Lord had not been on Moses’s side he would have died as a baby. Quite a lot of us would also have died as babies without divine intervention. We all have our stories.

The brothers of Joseph actually planned to kill him and that would have been the end of his Story. But Reuben, (by the Leading of God) intervened. Gen 37: 21-22. Reuben was going to rescue him later but would have scuttled God’s plan to take Joseph to Egypt. “If it had not been the Lord….” What if Potiphar decided to kill Joseph for the report of his alleged attempt to rape his wife. What if he decided to cut off his hand or punish him in another way that would not lead to his meeting the King’s cup bearer.

What if Ruth had not insisted on returning with Naomi to Bethlehem. Naomi would have died as a bitter old woman. But God delivered her through Ruth by ensuring that Ruth met Boaz and found favour with Boaz. Ruth was a great grandmother of David and a progenitor of Jesus Christ.

*4. *ESTHER**
what about Esther, an orphan who became Queen so that the Jews in Persia were not destroyed by the King’s edict. Her coming to the Palace ensured that there was a counterforce to the plan to eliminate the Jews by Harman. “If it had not been the Lord on the side of the Jews…”
Time and space will not permit us to talk about David and his many scrapes with death. Jeremiah in Jer38:4-13 was put in a muddy well to die but an official of the king spoke on his behalf and he was rescued from the pit. If the Lord had not been on Jeremiah’s side, he would have been swallowed by the muddy pit.
We have other examples like Jonah, Daniel, Shadrach, Meschah and Abednego, Baby Jesus who had to be taken to Egypt until the death of King Herod in (Mat2:13-15).

What about you and I.
Can you recall and see how God had delivered you out of death and disease in this year. We travel, we go to work, some of us have had surgeries, the type that have killed other people. Some of us have been involved in ghastly accidents but there was no fatality. Covid-19 is rampaging all over the world but the Lord has been on the side of the weak and vulnerable of Africa.
The year 2020 has been a most unusual year. About One Million people have died as a result of the Covid-19 virus. But God has been on our side and we are still here. You and I are here because of the mercy of God. Lam3:22-23- We are kept by the mercies of God. Not everyone received mercy. If the Lord was not on our side we would have been consumed by the wrath and anger of men. God’s mercy has kept us and we give Him all the glory.

We remember all the above inorder to strengthen our hope and faith in God. We are confident that He that has delivered us in the past, is also still delivering and will yet deliver us in the future. 2Cor1:10. He is Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever more (Heb13:8). If the LORD HAD NOT BEEN ON OUR SIDE- what would we be saying today. He who began a good work in us will complete it. Phil1:6. Our deliverance is in the hand of God
