Fear of the Lord

Hymn: Let us With a Gladsome Mind

The steadfast love of our Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning, Great is thy faithfulness, O Lord great is thy faithfulness.

Father, we declare You are the Almighty God, the giver of life. We declare You are the alpha, omega, maker of heaven and earth. We thank you for the gift of life, for another day. Be thou exalted for ever. We say you are the ever gracious and merciful God, Glory to Your Name. Amen.

BIBLE TEXT: Psalm 103

Psalm 103 is a psalm of David in praise the Lord’s mercies. He lists numerous blessings and benefits of mercies of God:

_Forgives iniquities, heals diseases v3.

_Redeems our lives from destruction v4.

_Crowns us with lovingkindness and tender mercies v4.

_Satisfies our mouth with good things, so youth_ _renewed like the eagle v5.

_Executes righteousness and justice for all oppressed, v6.

_Slow to anger and abounding in mercy and grace. v8.

_Has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished according to our iniquities, has even removed our transgressions from us as far as east is from west v10 -12.

_Recognises our frailty and transience like flowers and grass of the field v14-16.

David intermittently identifies characteristics of recipients of above benefits and blessings; THOSE WHO FEAR THE LORD:

“For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy towards those who fear Him”, (Psalm 103 v 11)

“As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him”. (Psalm 103 v 13)

“But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children’s children. (Psalm 103 v 17)

“To such as keep His covenant, and to those who remember His commandments to do them”.(Psalm 103 v 18)

The Lord’s mercies are completely at His discretion. “For HE says to Moses, ‘I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.’ So, then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.” Romans 9 v 14-15

David in verses Psalm 103:11-18 above, just lists his observations of characteristics of beneficiaries of the Lords mercies. These include the fear of the Lord, and those who keep HIS covenant, and remember to obey His commandments.

Genuine fear of the Lord is in itself a gift from HIM. It accompanies conversion, a yielding to God as LORD, and receipt of God’s Holy Spirit.

Brethren, we have had many teachings on the fear of the Lord. This morning let us just call out to the Lord for a fresh outpouring of His Spirit, that we may daily walk in fear of HIM.

“—-The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. His delight is in the fear of the Lord, ——-”. Isaiah 11 v 1-3

Father, I thank you for the blood of Jesus Christ, and the privilege to come to Your Throne of Grace. I am grateful for Your countless and endless mercies and blessings on me, loved ones and Your Church.

Father, in the name of Jesus I ask for a fresh outpouring of Your Spirit on me, loved ones and Your Church. I ask for an infilling of the Spirit of knowledge, and of the fear of the Lord.

Father in Jesus name, I ask to be a candidate of Your Mercy; great abundant and everlasting. To be a beneficiary of the resultant blessings and benefits, and that it triumphs over every judgement.

Father we thank You for answered prayers. Glory to Your name. Amen.
