TOPIC:  BLESSINGS IN TRUST AND OBEDIENCE TO GOD

TEXT: Exodus 15:25-26 KJV

[25] And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,

[26] And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee. …

MESSAGE

Good morning brethren and welcome to the month of GRACE. We thank God for His faithfulness through the months of January to May. This month in our Assembly has been declared as the month of Divine Grace and I pray that the Grace of God will see us all through it in Jesus name.

My message for us this morning is not about grace as you can see from the Bible text. This morning you will please permit me to share my experience/ testimony about what happened to me in relation to my chosen topic of this morning. Pardon me and Kindly be patient to read to the end. Thank you.

I will like to point out from the text some key features .

No 1 is Instruction,

No 2 is Trust and

No 3 is Obedience.

We all know the story of the Israelites when they left Egypt and after crossing the Red Sea they were in the wilderness. In our text they got to a place where the water was not good to drink and Moses their leader cried unto the Lord and four things featured .

1. INSTRUCTIONS: “And The Lord shewed him (Moses) a tree “ ie the solution to their problems.

2. TRUST: “which when he had cut”

3. OBEDIENCE: “he had cast into the waters”

4. RESULT: “waters were made sweet”

There was an instruction, followed by trust and obedience then a desired result. Moses was shown the solution to their problem, the showing is the instruction. He trusted that if he cut the tree and cast it in obedience into the bitter water, the water will be fit for their consumption. He did all that and got a result , a miracle.

Brethren, Obedience is always better for us as children of God. We must learn to trust and obey Him always. Hebrews 11:6 says without faith we cannot please God. If we must please Him then we must operate on the basis of trust/faith in Him and live a life of total not half obedience to him in order for Him to accomplish whatever He wants to do in our lives.

We can see from this account that the conversation was between Moses and God. He cried unto God in distress and God gave him the solution and he achieved results. Verse 26 talks about harkening diligently to the commandments/instructions of God which comes with a promise of freedom from sickness and healing .

Many of us tend to prove stubborn at times when the Lord is speaking to us and giving us instructions about issues affecting us. We might have prayed and fasted and the Lord has shown us what to do but because of lack of trust and unbelief we disobey and turn deaf ears to those instructions and we keep suffering and our problems linger on. I pray that none of us will suffer from any diseases or negative consequences of disobedience in Jesus name. Amen.

At times, God can send His instructions to us specifically or through people/men of God and in some instances through the Holy Spirit Himself nudging us or laying it in our heart to do certain things.

When we trust God, then obeying Him will come naturally. However, because  of negative human experiences we feel vulnerable at times, and it makes us not to trust and obey God. In our vulnerability we want to defend ourselves and so we try to justify our act of disobedience. That was my own experience which I share in my testimony at the end of this message. May the Lord have mercy on us and help us to trust and obey Him completely irrespective of the negative experiences and/or unfavorable circumstances we are in; because on the long run it pays us to obey Him.

There are many rewards/blessings we derive from trust and obedience to God some of which are enumerated as follows:

THE REWARDS/BLESSINGS OF OBEDIENCE :

1. There is healing. In 2 Kings 5: 1-15 is the story of Naaman the leper. His obedience to the instructions of the man of God got him his total healing.

2. There is great reward: In the story of the talents in Matthew 25:14-23 the servants that did not bury their talents but put them to good use got more because they trusted their master and obeyed him.

3. There is provision: In Genesis 22: 1-14, when God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac his only son to Him, he trusted GOD and obeyed Him and in the end God provided a ram to be sacrificed instead of Isaac.

4. There is protection: Psalm 91 is our guarantee for all round protection when we live in absolute trust and obedience to the word of God. Also, the children of Israel were protected in Goshen from the angel of death when God struck the first born of the Egyptians because they obeyed and observed the Passover in Exodus 12: 2-13.

5. There is Abundance: In 1 Kings 17: 9-16 the widow of Zarephath trusted and obeyed the word of prophet Elijah and she and her household lived in abundance for many days.

6. There is a change in level: Also a widow, the wife of one of the sons of the prophets in 2 Kings 4:1-7 trusted and obeyed the instructions of prophet Elisha and she and her sons became oil merchants.

7. There is victory: When the children of Israel got to the Red Sea in Exodus 14 they were distressed because of the host of the Egyptians pursuing them but the Lord gave Moses instructions and when he obeyed their enemies perished in the sea.

I pray that these blessings and  more shall be our portion as we continue to live in total obedience to God in Jesus name.

On the other hand, there are also consequences of disobedience.  One story that readily comes to mind is that of King Saul in 1 Samuel 15: 1-22. God sent Prophet Samuel to King Saul to tell  him to utterly destroy the Amalekites but he partially obeyed the instructions and he paid dearly for it.

Also in the story of the young and the old prophet in 1 Kings 13: 1-31, the former disobeyed God’s instruction never to eat or drink anything nor go back the way he came; but after delivering God’s message to King Jeroboam he disobeyed and followed the old prophet who lied to him and he lost his life.

May we never be foolish to suffer the consequences of disobedience in Jesus name.

MY TESTIMONY

Please read my testimony below perhaps it will minister to someone today. God bless you.

About 2 -3 weeks ago I got an SOS from someone I had known from childhood. In the past I had occasionally supported him and his family because I took him as a junior brother, but sometime in 2018 and last year he borrowed some money from me and failed to pay back despite his promises. I felt offended because of thIs. Even my husband was privy to this loans and when the repayment was not forthcoming we both concluded that he lacked integrity so I should just forget about it.

It took a while for me to get over this issue as I kept saying that this person was an ingrate but eventually I wrote off the debts because I knew he couldn’t pay back. I forgave him in 2018 and continued to support him . So when he did the same thing with the last loan,  It gave me a good reason this time to ignore his SOS despite the fact that I kept struggling with that decision because the Holy Spirit kept nudging and telling me I have been blessed to be a blessing and that I should not be so mean to him since I know the guy is managing to survive . So I decided that I would give him a certain amount if the nudging persisted. It actually did persist almost daily, but I didn’t obey, instead I kept justifying my disobedience based on the fact that the guy had wronged me. He lied in order to get the loan from me. We are to forgive and forget right? but I don’t think I did or maybe I did partially . Like I said earlier, when we are vulnerable and have bad experiences we tend to justify our disobedience to God’s instructions. And so the days passed and I kept pushing back the nudging from the Holy Spirit with excuses.

However, on Monday the 3rd of May 2021 as I was praying in tongues in the early hours the name of this guy dropped in my spirit again and I started wondering why his name was coming to my mind while praying at that hour. There and then I knew the Holy Spirit was at work because my mind had never stopped struggling about assisting him. I stopped praying and picked my phone and decided to obey God that day and so I made an online transfer of a token amount as I felt the Holy Spirit was telling me I had not forgotten what the guy did even though I had forgiven him the debt otherwise I should have assisted him immediately I saw his SOS coupled with the persistent nudging. I chose to obey because I didn’t want any hinderance to my prayers . After making the transfer I continued praying and no sooner,  the Holy Spirit said again in my spirit “ IS THAT HOW MUCH I ASKED YOU TO GIVE HIM?” Brethren , I exclaimed ! and I said ha! Hooollyyy Spriiiiiiit! Hmmmm!, and immediately I picked up my phone again and did another transfer to add up to the first amount I gave.

Brethren, the crux of this testimony that connects with the blessings of obedience is that,  immediately I did that 2nd transfer the pain I was having in my stomach  DISAPPEARED INSTANTLY. Earlier on, before I started praying I had been having some pain and discomfort like pins and needles in my tommy  due to gastrointestinal issues that I’ve been  battling with for years such that I don’t eat certain foods that cause gas pain, sometimes the pain and discomfort can last for days anytime I violate my diet; I think I took something for dinner that was causing me that discomfort. That faithful night brethren, the discomfort left me and I had a relief immediately I obeyed and transferred the balance money.  The pain and discomfort just disappeared  instantly and I felt so light. It was like a DREAM to me. I was awe stricken and I’m still in awe of this God and this miracle. I started crying and worshiping God, praising and thanking Him. He turned my captivity of many years around and I AM FREE, Hallelujah!!! Please Praise the Lord with me ooooo. I couldn’t wait for the day to break to share my testimony with my family. I told myself that so it’s simple obedience that has cost  me my healing all this years . Then I remembered the testimony Daddy GO shared about a rich man  who refused to forgive his son in law because he was maltreating his daughter. He had a strange sickness which made him to be swelling up. When brought to daddy for prayers he told him to forgive whoever he was holding in unforgiveness and the moment he did that he shrank and came back to his normal size such that his wedding ring fell off his finger. I’m sure some of us reading will remember this testimony.

I believe the Holy Spirit had registered and agreed with my intention to eventually assist this brother of mine and He was just waiting for me to obey so He could heal me as that night was my set time after several years.

I guess He would have been laughing at me all the times I was struggling and in between opinions and because He knows the thoughts and intents of our hearts. When I did not obey all His his nudging he had to arrest me again while praying.

Brethren this experience thought me two things, and that is, when you forgive you must forget completely. I thought I had forgiven and forgotten the wrong done to me but I was still holding on to it otherwise I wouldn’t be struggling in my spirit over this matter , which was the reason why the Holy Spirit had to settle it with me that night because He loves me so much and wanted to heal me of a condition I had been battling with for  many years. It was my set time for mercy, favor and deliverance (Psalms 102:13) and I thank God I did not miss it. The devil wanted to rob me of the opportunity but I thank God. I am convinced that when it is God’s set time to favor His children no devil can stop Him.

I pray you will not miss your set time in Jesus name. Amen.

Another lesson I learnt is complete obedience. I think If I had not yielded to the nudging of the Holy Spirit to obey Him completely by doing the 2nd transfer i.e to give  the exact amount I had purposed as I said earlier, which He knew about, I wouldn’t have received this healing for which I am still very very grateful. I am rejoicing and  I trust GOD  that this healing is perfected and permanent in Jesus name. Amen. All glory to my king and greatest healer. Hallelujah! Amen!

I am sorry for taking your time and I thank you for reading through this testimony . I couldn’t shorten it more than this and I wouldn’t have been able to share it in details in the church physically because of time, hence my sharing here. God bless you sir/ma.

IN CONCLUSION

Obedience is key in this Christian race. Like the chorus of a popular hymn which says trust and obey , for there is no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.

Unforgiveness  is one of the BAIT OF SATAN. He uses it to deprive us of so many blessings that we can derive through our trust and obedience to God. To me I thought I had forgiven and forgotten the offense of my brother but to God I was still hurting and that’s why I refused to help him despite all the nudgings from the Holy Spirit.

If you are reading this message and the Lord is speaking to you about some instructions He had given you either to let go on a matter, to surrender your life to Jesus or to do something, I encourage you to better hurry up and obey because the Lord Loves you and wants  to do something  beautiful in your life that will glorify His name. Please don’t hinder Him through your disobedience.

May we receive the grace to live a life of total trust and obedience to God in Jesus name. Amen

  1. Hi Ogwo. This is such a great post. There is a saying I love from one of the desert fathers “Obedience responds to obedience. When man obeys God’s will, God obeys his pray”
