REVIVE ME OH LORD!
TEXT: HOSEA 6:1-3
Father, as we gather again to hear your Word and pray, please send us your Word, transform our lives and grant speedy answers to all our prayers. Amen!
Text: Hos 6:1-3
1 Come, and let us return unto the Lord: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.
2 After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.
3 Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
A church can have a large crowd and yet not experience revival, because human charisma can attract a crowd but it can not produce revival. Revival is not something that we can “schedule” or “produce” because it is the work of God. So today we want to discuss briefly what revival is, the indications for revival and then we take a few prayers.
1. What is revival?
Definition (Biblical): The word “revival” is from the Hebrew word chayah and means “to bring back to life,” to “restore to consciousness,” or to “restore to a previous condition”. It means a restoration, rejuvenation, or renewal of interest after spiritual neglect, oblivion, or obscurity.
In short, revival is restoration to life, vigor, and strength. It is an awakening of interest in and care for the things of God.
It’s pretty easy to see we need revival just by opening our eyes to what’s going on around us. Watch the news. Look at the people and families living around you…trying to stand against the storms of life. Take a look at what this generation and the next is faced with if revival doesn’t happen?
The only way our world will ever change is when the church experiences revival because “The fate of any nation rests in the hands of the righteous.” – Pro 14:34
2. What Are The Indications That We Need Revival?
The increasing unfaithfulness of people to times of worship and prayer.
When church and the things of God are options.
When our worship and/or prayer is lifeless, ritualistic and chore-like.
When sin is a pattern in our lives. In other words…it’s tolerated, accepted, and even pursued and enjoyed.
When our fear of or reverence for God is lax.
When we love the pleasures of the world more than we love the things of God.
When we don’t grieve over sinners and don’t use every opportunity to tell them about Jesus.
When we are unwilling to take all necessary steps to restore broken relationships.
When people wander from church to church in search of “how to get blessed with the least level of commitment.”
When professionalism and techniques have replaced reliance upon the Holy Spirit.
When the most significant lifestyle difference between us and those who don’t serve the Lord is that we attend church every week.
We need revival because it does what only God can do! When the church is revived…the lost will be awakened. But there is a price to pay for revival to happen: “Revival, no matter how great or small in its ultimate scope, always begins with individual believers whose hearts are desperate for God, and who are willing to pay the price to meet Him.” – “Del Fehsenfeld Jr.
Can it happen again? Yes! One young man decided to pray…to pursue God…to live holy…to fix his heart on seeing God move…and God responded! He still responds!
Oh, that we might know the Lord !
Let us press on to know him.
