Text : Genesis 15: 1-6
After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. And Abram said, Lord God , what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. And he believed in the Lord ; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
Prayer: Father, you are indeed Alpha and Omega, the everlasting God. To you we give ALL praise and honour today. Thank you for the blessing of life and a new day. We know that your mercies are new every morning. We receive your mercies today and ask for grace to please you in ALL things today, in Jesus Name.
In Psalm 90, a prayer attributed to Moses, the psalmist meditates on the fragility of human life before the everlasting God. But he concludes with humble hope, asking that God will establish his people’s work to endure: May the favour of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands.
The work that will truly endure has to have a foundation that is deep and rooted in the Lord and His promises. The circumstances of today and the temporary troubles we encounter might want to get us overly focused on self. The covenant we have with God is one of love, one that looks beyond self and temporary things. Our covenant with Jesus Christ is one that changes lives and looks out for the good of others. The simple question today is – are you and I mindful of the generational consequences of every action we take? Are we so cumbered with such a load of care that we have become distracted?
The topic for last Sunday`s Home Fellowship was “WILL YOU OFFER YOUR OWN ISAAC”. We were reminded of God’s covenant to Abram and how God stayed faithful even when Abraham tried alternative and suboptimal routes to help God. Abraham in our base scripture above (Genesis 15:1-6) sought to first establish Eliezer, his servant as his heir. God would have none of that. After many years of waiting and pressure, Abraham went further in Genesis 16 to help God through Ishmael. Remember that God had said in Genesis 15 that the heir would come out of Abraham`s bowels. Ishmael could indeed qualify to be the heir according to Genesis 15. In those days, it appeared legit for a barren woman to give one’s maid to a husband to bear children. We see in the case of Rachel and Leah that a significant number of the 12 sons of Jacob came from their maids…and there was no discrimination. For Abraham though, the foundation had to be purer. It had to be deeper as the promise was great indeed.
in Genesis 17:7 God said “And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.”
For this covenant, surrogate motherhood would not work. Sarah was as much a part of the promise as Abraham. Abraham’s bowels, as mentioned in God’s promise in Genesis 15 was not about him alone. It covered Sarah for the 2 were now one in God’s eye. This was why Sarah’s unbelief and laughter in Genesis 18:12-15 did not change God’s covenant.
Today, God would have us be reminded that:
1. His covenant with you and I are not temporary or trivial. We must pay attention to details
2. His ways are way higher that our ways. He has purer eyes and does not behold iniquity
3. God does not build eternal legacies on the temporary foundations of men, no matter how acceptable they are to others. His ways are His ways. We must seek Him and work with him to establish deep and enduring foundations for generational blessings
4. Yesterday’s errors will not stop God from establishing His purpose in our lives. Our God is a merciful God. We do however have to repent and “put away Ishmeal” for our Isaac to be established. Those things that appear OK and yet are not in God’s will must give way.
1. Father, thank You for the covenant of life in Jesus Christ
2. Father, please grant me the grace to give up and forget the suboptimal things that are behind
3. Father, please rebuild my foundation to carry the generational blessings you have ordained for me
4. Father, help me today to embrace the path to my generational blessings; the path of righteousness and integrity with you. Redirect my steps O Lord!
In Jesus Name we have prayed. Amen
Thank You Jesus.
