Count Your Blessings

TEXT: Psalm 103:1-5 (NIV)

1 Praise the Lord, my soul;

all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

2 Praise the Lord, my soul,

and forget not all his benefits—

3 who forgives all your sins

    and heals all your diseases,

4 who redeems your life from the pit

and crowns you with love and compassion,

5 who satisfies your desires with good things

so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

INTRODUCTION

We have every reason to thank God who has brought us this far, to the month of December, in Year 2020.

Without a doubt, this year will go down in history for many people as a year to remember forever. It all started on a very promising note until things changed, and almost everything took a nose dive barely 90 days into the year.

I remember one popular quote (by Ali Baba) that 2020 is not a year to worry so much about profit and loss or your balance sheet. He said that you would have achieved a lot if you can survive this year.

Looking back into the events and times of this year, that statement could not be truer.

The thrust of my message today is that as we start the last month of year 2020 and we take stock for the year, we should not focus too much on what we did not or could not do, nor on what we lost or failed to gain. If we are discerning and look inward we can see a lot of things that God did for us; and for this we must be grateful.

Think about the mercy of God on Nigeria. How could we, as a nation, have handled the outbreak of covid-19 considering the poor state of our medical facilities and infrastructures?

Some so called ‘wise men’ from called advanced countries had theorised that covid-19 would leave corpses of dead people on the roads and streets of Africa, including Nigeria. But the mercy of God said NO and turned it around. Indeed, there were corpses of many dead people on the roads and streets in Europe and Americas. We are not mocking these nations or their dead. This is a way to appreciate that God did something for us.

There was a time during the pandemic that the price of crude oil was negative. The economy of Nigeria was expected to shut down completely given its dependence on crude oil. God in His infinite mercies sustained our economy.

There were incidents of insecurity and security breach all over the place, but God kept us all.

People lost their jobs and businesses, but the Lord kept ours. Among those who lost jobs and businesses, God has opened new doors for some.

Many individuals, including some of us, would have contracted covid-19 but we were asymptomatic. God strengthened our immunity and used our body systems to fight it off without us knowing.

Some of us actually contracted the virus and were treated. Someone I know told me that he was down with covid-19 and was out of circulation for about one month. He confessed that he was a bundle of miracle, that only God kept him alive. Not many people were that blessed as there were people known to us who were killed by the virus even though they were in the appropriate medical facilities receiving treatment.

Some people were not infected by, nor killed by covid-19, but are no more today. Some of them travelled through the same roads we all travel through, but they never completed their journeys.

Recently, some people who had escaped from the deadly covid-19 were protesting for a better Nigeria but unfortunately their lives were terminated by stray or targeted bullets.

If it was possible, many rich people would offer huge sums of money to God to remain alive. We may not have as much, but we our lives are invaluable.

If it was possible, some people will offer their best possessions to stay healthy. God has kept us healthy, so we need not worry about the cost of the best hospitals or healing centres.

If it was possible, many people will pay whatever sacrifice is required to keep their homes. God has kept our homes together in love despite the storms around.

Brethren the list is endless.

When we truly count our blessings, we will be awed at what God has done for us. This should lead us into sessions, days, seasons of thanksgiving unto God.

WHY SHOULD WE THANK GOD?

It is the right thing to do because God expects us to give thanks always. Psalm 92:1

It shows that we are doing the will of God. 1 Thess. 5:18

Doing God’s will is a recipe for answered prayers. Mt. 6:10; Jn. 6:10; Jn. 11:41-42

It is a confirmation that we belong to God. Ps. 100:3

Since we belong to God, He will surely keep us. Ps. 17:8; Zech. 2:8

Thanksgiving births complete and overflowing blessings. Luke 17:11-19

It activates God’s mercy. Ps. 136: 1-4

NEXT STEPS

Please take time to introspect and take note of all the good things God has done for you this year.

Give Him quality thanksgiving, praise and worship every day of December 2020.

Trust God to keep you and your loved ones through to the end of this year. Phil. 1:6 (God is able to complete every good work that He started in your life)

Expect Him to do greater things in year 2021 and beyond. It does not matter what the Economic Analysts are saying about 2021, you and your household shall prosper all around in Jesus name. Job 22:29 (When men are cast down, you shall experience lifting.)

PRAYER POINTS

Father, thank you for everything that you have done for me and my loved ones through this year 2020.

Father, uproot anything and everything that you did not plant in my life in Jesus name.

Father, you don’t have abandoned projects, please perfect every good work that you started in my life in Jesus name.

Father, please have mercy on me and my loved ones: let us laugh last by the end of this year. Please take away our sorrows, shame and cover us with your glory in Jesus name.

Father, please make 2021 a glorious year for me and my loved ones. Make it my year of full recovery and complete restoration in Jesus name.

As the Lord lives and His spirit is alive, you will end 2020 on a high note and cruise through 2021 and the years beyond in Jesus name.
