READ: 1 Samuel 30: 1-8

TEXT: 1 Samuel 30: 6
“And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.”

INTRODUCTION
Often times where we are (our current situation) may be highly discouraging especially when we have prayed and trusted God for a turnaround and there seem to be no change. Nevertheless, we should not be discouraged because we are serving the God of the eleventh hour who can turn negative situation around to positive at the last minute. Truly, We are getting to the end of the year and so it is natural to expect answers to one’s prayers most especially the ones that are overdue for testimonies.

Brethren, a prince in Lo-debar is discouraging as we see in the story of Mephiboseth in 2Samuel 9:1-13. A man who fears God, accused and imprisoned for an offence he did not commit is discouraging. This is the case of Joseph as we see in Genesis 39: 11- 20. Servants upon horses and princes walking as peasants is discouraging according to Ecclesiastes 10:7 and so is staying down while contemporaries are going higher.

Brethren, suffering in the midst of plenty is quite discouraging but in all these and more, the Lord is saying, you are more than a conqueror therefore be strong and encourage yourself in Him. He says in Hebrews 13:5 ‘I will never leave thee nor forsake thee’.

When you consider what happened to David in the story from our text this morning, one will say he ought to be discouraged because all seemed to have been lost; but rather he encouraged himself in the Lord and went to seek the Lord’s face on the next line of action.

My brother/ sister when you find yourself in a difficult and unpleasant situation what do you do? May be you expected that by now WHERE YOU ARE is not where you are supposed to be financially, maritally, spiritually, academically or professionally. I say say to you, DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED’, rather, encourage yourself in the Lord like David .

Prophetically, this month of November has been declared as our ‘Month of Hope’ with the Bible text from Job 14:7 which says “ For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease “. Let your hope be built on Christ the solid rock who never fails. He will not leave you in the valley of hopelessness. Help shall come your way and before the end of this month you will receive an eleventh hour miracle in Jesus name.

WHY MUST WE NOT BE DISCOURAGED

(1)Discouragement is a spirit from the pit of hell to get the victim bitter and to worsen the situation.

(2)God commands us against it. Joshua 1:9

(3)Our present state is not our terminus, we are only passing through, we will cross over. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Psalm 30:5

(4)Discouragement will truncate our journey of destiny. 1 Kings 19: 14-16

(5)Discouragement will keep the Lord far from and keep the devil close to us. 1 Sam 16:14

(6)Our present state is permitted by the Lord for our good. Romans 8:28

(7)Where we are, qualifies us for divine intervention. Exodus 3:7-10

*WHAT DO WE DO TO GET OUT OF DISCOURAGEMENT? *

(1)Be grateful for where you are. Gratitude makes things better and not worse. Jeremiah 30:19

(2)Rejoice in hope and be patient in tribulation. Romans 12:12

(3)We should not compare ourselves with others. God has His plan for each one of His children. 2Cor 10:12

(4)Meditate on God’s Word daily for encouragement. Joshua 1:8

(5)Keep praying until the Lord intervenes. Luke 18:1. There is a song that says ‘we should never be discouraged but take it to the Lord in prayer’.

(6)keep asking in the name of Jesus that your joy may be full. John 16:24b .

CONCLUSION
Be assured, God will not cast away the righteous. I am encouraging someone this morning that there is going to be a shift and you will not end this year where you are. The Lord will make a way for you where there seems to be no way. Trust in Him as you study daily and obey his words. Have faith and believe that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him . (Hebrews 11:6 ) He will make lines to fall in pleasant places for you and you will end this year with great testimonies in Jesus name.
