I Live By Faith – Bishop Andrew Merritt
TEXT : Hab 2:1-4 KJV
1 I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.
2 And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.
4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
It is not a coincidence that God arranged these verses in this order. The passage starts with the yearning of every believer in prayer – to see what God will say unto me; to get a vision of the future, to receive direction. In His graciousness we receive what we have asked for – a vision, a way forward, that career path, person to marry etc. Then we have to wait for the full manifestation of the vision. As Hab 2:3 says, the vision is for an appointed time. God in His graciousness knows that we need to grow in grace (2 Pet 3:18) to have adequate capacity to thrive and yet remain humble at such giddy heights. God knows that for his children, there is need for maturity to be able to digest strong meat. Strong faith in God is the ingredient we need to wait for the manifestation of God’s promises in our lives, family, church and nation.
God indeed is a faithful and merciful father who does not give us more than we can carry (1 Cor 10:13). While Israel was in the wilderness, God could have accelerated the possession of the Promised Land. Rather, He took some time. See Deut 7: 21-22 Thou shalt not be affrighted at them: for the Lord thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible. And the Lord thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.
God knew Isreal needed to be courageous and fearless to possess the land He had promised them. This land however is occupied by great kings and giants. God knew that he needed his people to mature/enlarge into a great nation to be able to “OCCUPY” the Promised Land, not just to defeat the inhabitants of the land. Defeating the occupants is nothing to God. Giving you that godly desire, that blessing, that goal is nothing with God. Remember that He is God who is great among us according to the above scripture. A mighty God and terrible. None of our adversaries or contenders can stand His awesome power. But, we need to be ready to OCCUPY. Here is the need for faith. We must live by faith for God will have no pleasure in any whose faith will not endure the maturation period. Heb 10:38 now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draws back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. Brother/Sister, you are in your maturation period as God brings you into that next level, into that vision. Please live in faith.
Today God would have us know that we, who are the just in Christ Jesus, must live by faith. It takes faith to praise God and give Him thanks in ALL things (no matter how terrible). It takes big faith to see ALL things working together for my good when it appears that I have been traversing the wilderness for 40 years. Indeed, God is maturing you and preparing you for that vision which has a time/date stamp on it. Don’t rush out of this process but continue to trust Him for without faith we are useless. Remember, the patriarchs of old obtained a good report. In Jesus Name, your good report will soon come. Please wait in faith. Nigeria, our country will also enter into its place…but, we “His People” must hold the country up in faith. Let us not despair and walk as children of the world. We must see the vision of a new Nigeria and continue in FAITH. We are the “light of Nigeria“. May our faith stand the present and future tests in Jesus Name, Amen!
1. Father, thank you for the gift of salvation and for making me just through the blood of Jesus
2. Father, please increase my faith to wait upon you and your promises for my life and my family.
3. Father, in Jesus Name, contend with all that contend with the vision you have given me and all the godly promises in my life and my family.
4. Father, help me and my brethren not to faint in time of trouble, but to be bold and courageous.
5. Father strengthen the church in Nigeria to take its rightful place and stand in the gap
In Jesus Name we have prayed. Amen
