BIBLE PASSAGE: 2 SAM 6:6-7
- And when they came to Nachon’s threshing floor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the Ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.
- And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the Ark of God.
The verses of Scripture in 2 Samuel 6:6-7 tell an interesting story, and I always wondered why God struck Uzzah and killed him when he tried to steady the Ark of God, to keep it from toppling over. It seemed to me like an unfair reward and even a somewhat harsh judgement for an act that appeared to be well intended.
The Bible teaches us that God does nothing outside of His Word. Everything we offer to [or do for] the LORD must be on the basis of the Lord Jesus Christ [His Word], and what He did for us at the Cross. Anything contrary, violates His Word and God will never accept it.
Uzzah was from the lineage of Abinadab and he belonged to the tribe that had been ordained to attend the Ark of God as their duty. Apparently, he ought to have known what the Lord required of him and so his action was contrary to what God’s Word said [whether or not he meant well]. Meaning well and acting in obedience to God’s Word can be at variance. It turns out that God was not impressed with Uzzah’s “religious act,” when he attempted to keep the Ark of God from toppling. The Law of Moses at that time, as ordained by God, said that the Priests must carry the Ark of God upon their shoulders; the Priests were Types of Christ; but Israel had become entangled with the ways of the world . They had borrowed the way of the Philistines and set the Ark of God in a “new cart,” contrary to the Word of God. How many today are driving “new carts ,” thinking all the time that we are doing great things for God? God in His Character, cannot endorse any work of the flesh. In fact, He is opposed to any work of the flesh, and judges it.
The Almighty God does not need any kind of help with anything. How do you even begin to help The One Who upholds all things by the Word of His Power. What God ordains, He will uphold. On the contrary, what man has set up, he feels himself bound to sustain.
The Living God is a Consuming Fire to the actions of the carnal nature, whether it be found inside or outside the Family of God.
Our responsibility as children of God and disciples of Jesus Christ, is to follow His Word in simple obedience. Even then, we are constrained in this by our limited power as human beings, which is why God’s prescribed Order of Victory for every Believer is Christ and the Cross, with the Cross ever being the Object of our Faith, which then gives the Holy Spirit latitude to work within our lives, bringing about the desired results [1 Corinthians 1:17-18;1 Corinthians 2:2; Galatians 6:14; Colossians 2:14-15].
May God help us to know what His Word says, and to obey His Word completely, in the Name of Jesus.
Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ and Your Holy Spirit which You have sent to help us and teach us how to live for You. Please help us to be sensitive and attentive to His leading in the Name of Jesus.
Father, we embrace Your Word wholeheartedly. Please help us to obey You completely in everything so that Your will may be done in our lives, and on earth, in the Name of Jesus.
