The life of every Christian is like that of a soldier on the battlefield, where the enemy (Satan) is the opponent. In our text, Satan, through Jezebel, threatened to take Elijah’s life and after defeating the prophets of Baal. It is a common thing that after a victorious battle, Satan often regroups to challenge the victor who defeated him or his agent. That is the reason why one should not rest after the victory but daily preserve to maintain the victory. There is the need to keep going, working out one’s salvation daily with fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12).
The fear in this context is the fear of God, avoiding human pride and ego putting on the divine nature of God (love, peace, and holiness). The Christian race is rough and there are many dangers, yet we are encouraged to keep going. in spite of the seeming danger, to keep going, knowing full well that Christ, the royal master, leads His Army against the foe. We are encouraged to look beyond our human frailty and get focused on Jesus, going on before us.
You dare not trust in yourself, to keep going, but fully trust in God because the arms of flesh will fail you. Hear Prophet Elijah’s response when God’s Word came to him in the cave while trying to escape from Jezebel’s threat; “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts, for the people Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars and killed your prophets with sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away”. And the Lord said to Elijah, “Go forth; Go” (1 Kings 19:11-15). As at the time Elijah was making this report, the scripture records that there were seven thousand men in Israel who had not bowed unto Baal.
Never give up, keep going, because God is faithful and able to see you through, to the end of our journey on earth, as He did to Elijah.
1 Kings 19:3 “Then he was afraid and he arose and went for his life and came to Beersheba which belongs to Judah and left his servant there.”
Because you have not given me the Spirit of fear but the Spirit of boldness and of a sound mind, Heavenly Father, help me to keep going as a Christian soldier, in this whole world in Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.”
