Escaping the Paycheck to Paycheck Life

CBN.com -As a young couple, James and Angela Hughes invested their life savings to launch a business in the home health care field. But the business did not pan out the way they had hoped. “It was just all-consuming,” Angela says. “We no longer had any time for church, for prayer, for fellowship with other believers. We weren’t tithing.”

Despite all their hard work and the income pouring in, they weren’t making a profit. “No matter how much money we would make, at the end of the month, there was more month than there was money,” Angela recalls. Her husband adds: “That was very hard as a man, just from the standpoint of being a provider.”

The Hugheses eventually had to close the business and declare personal bankruptcy. “We lost everything, even our vehicles,” Angela recalls. “We didn’t have a home anymore. We were selling our furniture. We lost everything. We had to file for unemployment. We had to apply for food stamps. It was a very dark place for us.”

The couple desperately cried out to God for help, and He answered. “I remember getting on our knees and holding hands in the living room, and I remember when I got off my knees after saying that prayer, I just felt a weight be lifted,” Angela remembers. “Two or three days after that prayer, we were watching The 700 Club and Pat Robertson was teaching on the laws of reciprocity. “It just kind of dawned on us: ‘This is what God wants us to do,’” James says. “From there, that’s when we started tithing.”

James and Angela were so committed to the biblical principles they had just learned that they began tithing to their local church and to The 700 Club from their unemployment checks. Soon, doors opened up for the Hugheses to start a new business, inspecting homes for banks, and the orders began pouring in.

“He wants our hearts and He wants us to have faith in him,’” says James. In 2012, the Hugheses’ company grossed over a million dollars. Today, they are members of The 700 Club’s Chairman’s Circle.

James’s advice to others? “Take him at his word,” he says. “That’s one thing we all have to learn how to do—me, Angela, CBN viewers—all of us. We just need to learn to take God at his word.”

Being obedient to God’s truth made an incredible difference for James and Angela. It can make a difference in your life too! Join them in partnering with CBN.
